Ben's 1x1x1 - The least best qualified humans - December 12, 2025 🚀

For those of you that are new here, every week I send what I call a 1x1x1.

One thought from my week.
One interesting find/tool from my week.
One image from my life.

Let's dive in 👇

Thought from the week

“Good businesses are worth paying up for. Good people even more so.”

- Charlie Munger

I heard this quote the other day about how rare it is to find two things in life:

Quality businesses and quality people.

Naturally, I started thinking about the best hires I’ve ever made.

The very first person that jumped into my brain: Sara Bates.

Who is Sara?!

Well… Sara is quality people.

Some BG: We’re interviewing Project Managers for WeHero 5+ years ago.

LinkedIn applications to the ceiling.

People with certifications, degrees, and LinkedIn endorsements from their high school math teachers.

And then there’s Sara.

By far the LEAST qualified for the job.

No industry experience.

No relevant experience.

No “project management ninja” certification.

But what she did have?

All the indicators that she was a legit, quality human.

Authentic.

Caring.

Passionate.

Competitive.

And the exact type of personality great teams are built around.

Look, I’ve made a lot of bad hires.

Like “we need to hit the eject button before this thing catches fire” bad hires.

It happens. Entrepreneurship is a contact sport.

But at the end of the day, all that matters is getting a few quality humans in the door.

People who turn out to be the heartbeat of the business.

Fast forward to today:

Sara (the least-qualified candidate we interviewed) now runs WeHero.

Like… runs it.

Captain of the ship. Queen of the castle. CEO of “I told you so.”

Building a business from the ground up involves a lot of pain, suffering, and existential dread.

But one of the bright spots, the good stuff, is finding the needles in the haystack.

The people who make everything feel lighter, funnier, more possible.

You can learn any skill.

But you can’t learn how to be a quality human.

Find your people.

Thanks Sara!

Interesting Tool/Find

I’m probably super late to the party on this one (classic me), but I just discovered that Meta basically snuck in a cheat code for working with influencers: Brand Collabs Manager.

Meta actually made it stupidly easy to find influencers, partner with them, track performance, all that good stuff without having to sacrifice your dignity in someone’s Instagram DMs.

Some of you that have been reading along for awhile might remember my unnecessary side quest to make my own wine.

Well, 12 months later, the first batch of Rad Dad Wine (TM pending) is actually here!

Does it taste any good?

Does that matter?

See you all next week!
