Ben's 1x1x1 - What am I up to this year? - January 9, 2026 🚀
For those of you that are new here, every week I send what I call a 1x1x1. One thought from my week. One interesting find/tool from my week. One image from my life.
Let's dive in 👇
Thought from the week
Somehow. No idea how we got here. Time is fake.
Like many of you who read this silly little newsletter, I use the last week of the year to reflect, zoom out, and get clear on how I actually want to spend my time in the year ahead (as opposed to how my calendar thinks I want to spend it).
When I looked back, the last two years were very clearly a season of exploration.
And wow… we explored.
I:
Launched a print newspaper (yes, paper… from trees 🌲).
Made wine (still counts as working).
Started a marketing company with my longtime business partner Andy.
Went deep into M&A (spreadsheets everywhere).
Had our first daughter, Parker Sampson (10/10 project, would recommend).
Started a cocktail hour hosting 20–40 business owners and founders every few months.
It’s been an absolute blast. Learned a ton. Tried a lot. Threw some darts. Missed a few. Hit a couple.
But in 2025, two things snapped into focus and basically tapped me on the shoulder and said,
“Hey buddy… maybe pick a lane for a minute.”
Discovery #1:
We’re having our second baby girl at the beginning of May.
(Excited. Terrified. Googling “how many diapers is too many diapers.”)
Discovery #2:
Luna, our belief that veterinary care can be more modern, more affordable, and lead to healthier, happier pets very clearly has legs. With just the first handful of test users in the first month, we've already saved pet parents thousands in animal hospital visits.
With those two realizations, I decided to lock back into a hyper-focused mental state.
The same one I used when we built WeHero.
Exploration season?
Closed.
It’s time to go heads down.
So that’s my year:
Family
Luna
And maybe a tiny bit of exploration sneaking in through the side door when no one’s looking.
Honestly, I’m excited.
There’s a ton of power in thinking about life in seasons and actually leaning into the one you’re in. I never would’ve found the idea for Luna without giving myself permission to wander, explore, and follow curiosity for a while.
That season mattered.
And if you’re feeling a little lost right now? Not sure where you’re headed?
My only advice: label it and lean into it.
Seasons come and go. So make the most of the one you’re in right here, right now.
Final reminder:
If you don’t want your goals to disappear like a hot potato in February, put them on a whiteboard in your bathroom.
I see mine every time I brush my teeth.
Twice a day.
No escape.
Happy 2026 everyone!
Interesting Tool/Find
I’ve been struggling with developers.
Not in a “they’re bad” way. More in a “my expectations might be mildly unhinged” way.
I want speed.
I want quality.
I want the Luna app to be a clean, buttery-smooth, 10/10 experience.
To be fair to them, I’m asking for a lot.
I was venting about this to my friend Benji, and he hit me with the best question of the year:
“Why aren’t you more involved in the coding yourself?”
He then went on to tell me about Claude Code and how he’s been using it.
Long story short: he convinced me to try it.
Fast forward a few days and I’m now living in my terminal, cranking out features like I suddenly know what I’m doing.
And honestly?
Kind of life-changing.
If you have:
• a product background
• decent instincts around UI/UX
• and a slightly obsessive personality
Claude Code is pretty freaking incredible.
I’m moving faster.
I understand the product better.
And I no longer have to translate my brain through three layers of Jira tickets.
Downside?
I now have back pain from being permanently hunched over my laptop like a caffeinated gargoyle.
Worth it.
Image from my life
This one hit me right in the feels.
My grandparents (front and center) got to spend the holidays with all three of their daughters, all seven of their grandkids, and all five of their great-grandkids.
That’s four generations of the same family… all in one place… at the same time.
Which feels incredibly special.
It was one of those moments where everything slows down for a second and you just think, wow… this is the stuff that actually matters.
We’re ridiculously lucky. Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it. ❤️
