Thought from the week

The Importance of Getting Belly to Belly

We live in a world where “connecting” means staring into a 2-inch Zoom box while pretending you don’t look at yourself the whole time.

But lately, I’ve been smashing the gas pedal on something old school: getting belly to belly (aka, in-person).

Recent examples from my life:

  • Hosted a founders cocktail hour with 20–30 business owners (networking, but with beer and cold brew).
  • Flew to Traverse City, Michigan last weekend to hang with my business partner Andy and his family.
  • Spent 8 hours in the car Wednesday just to see one of our first clients in person…and also play with my nephew instead of just waving at him on FaceTime.

Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s a huge pain.

You’ve got to find childcare, your inbox fills up like a frat house sink, Slack starts yelling “where are you???” messages, and suddenly you’re 200 emails behind.

But every time? Always worth it.

Andy had this saying last weekend that I loved: “You’ll never regret jumping in the lake.”

Some days when it was cold and windy, my whole body screamed “no.”

But Andy made sure I jumped in anyway.

And he was right, never once did I regret it.

That’s how I feel about belly-to-belly time.

I’ve never regretted it. Not once.

So next time you’ve got a big client meeting, a person you want to connect with, or a family member you haven’t hugged in way too long, jump in the lake.

Go belly to belly.

It’ll be inconvenient, awkward, maybe even exhausting.

But just like cold water, it’ll wake you up and you’ll be glad you did it.

Traverse City is terrible. Don't visit.

See you all next week!
